Hello,

I have two sets of slides that I presented to the glaciology students of Earth Sciences 5650.  The professor is Ian Howatt and he is a good contact to whom we should reach out in the future (grant proposals, ice studies, collaboration).

  57   Fri Feb 2 13:27:49 2018 Ian Best10-minute talksHardwareThe motivation and mechanism behind ARAs H-pol antennasARA

I gave this talk at the Feburary 1st internal group meeting, with the goal of explaining better why ARA uses slot antennas to measure the H-pole and roughly how they work. It turned into a good discussion behind the basics of antennas. Notes were added to the slides after the talk to summarize what was went over.

Some resources I found useful for understanding the subject;

Antenna-Theory.com page on slot antennas

Design and Initial Performance of the Askaryan Radio Array Prototype EeV Neutrino Detector at the South Pole

Slot Aerials and their Relation to Complementary Wire Aerials (Babinet's Principle)
